2001 Recycling Education Program of the Year
Award/Rogers, AR
The
Recycling program in Rogers is a unique cooperative community effort
of many groups. It began as an outgrowth of the Recycling Task Force
Committee of the Rogers Chamber of Commerce. Then mayor, John Sampler,
encouraged the establishment of a Community Recycling Education
Program in 1997. Funding is provided by Waste Management of Northwest
Arkansas and the Rogers Community Recycling Center to the Rogers
Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. Marcia Schoonaert was hired to
fill the position and the office is located at the Chamber.
Recycling Education in Rogers takes many forms, all of which promote
responsible solid waste management. The program promotes use of
both the Waste Management curbside recycling program and the Rogers
Community Recycling Center volunteer run drop off. The Recycling
Educator is available to answer phone questions and do presentations
for any group in the community from pre school to adult.
This award was sponsored by Arkansas Soft Drink
Association.

2001 Recycler of the Year Award/Nell Harrelson
Nell
Harrelson began her career with Stone County Recycling in 1997 as
a VISTA volunteer. In 2000, she took over as a manager of the struggling
recycling operation and since that time has taken it from an in-town
drop-off program to an efficient operation that has expanded throughout
rural Stone County. Collections for the year 2000 were just under
one million pounds--no small feat for an extremely rural county
of 11,000.
Nell Harrelson receives the 2001 Recycler of the Year Award.
This award was sponsored by Waste Management of Arkansas.
